The Roman Catholic Diocese of Kibungo was erected Sept. 5, 1968, by His Holiness Pope Paul VI, from the Diocese of Kabgayi. It is located in eastern Rwanda, with an area of 2 670 km2. It covers part of eastern Rwanda and has borders with Tanzania to the east and Burundi to the south. It has 15 parishes grouped into three deaneries:
- Kibungo deanery (Zaza, Kibungo, Bare and Rukoma);
- Rwamagana deanery (Rwamagana Kabarondo Mukarange Rukarae and Gishanda);
- Rusumo deanery (Nyarubuye, Rukira, Kirehe, Rusumo Gashiru and Musaza).
At its foundation the diocese was entrusted to His Excellency Monsignor Joseph SIBOMANA, born in Save, Diocese of Butare, on 25/04/1915. Until then Bishop of Ruhengeri, he was inducted in Kibungo December 29, 1968 by His Excellency Monsignor Amelio POGGI, then Apostolic Nuncio in Rwanda.
March 30, 1992 was elected the second Bishop of Kibungo, His Excellency Monsignor Frédéric RUBWEJANGA, born in NYABINYENGA, Diocese of Kabgayi in 1931. It is on August 28, 2007 that Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation and appointed His Excellency Bishop Kizito BAHUJIMIHIGO then Bishop of Ruhengeri to replace him.
The third Bishop of Kibungo was His Excellency Monsignor Kizito BAHUJIMIHIGO. He was born in Rwamagana, Kibungo Diocese, December 5, 1954. He was ordained priest July 25, 1980 in Kibungo. He was appointed Bishop of Ruhengeri November 21, 1997 and was inducted on June 27, 1998. August 28, 2007 His Excellency Monsignor Kizito BAHUJIMIHIGO, then Bishop of Ruhengeri, has been transferred by the Pope in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kibungo. On January 29, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation and appointed His Excellency Monsignor Thaddeus Ntihinyurwa, Archbishop of Kigali as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Kibungo.
Three years and three months after the resignation of His Excellency Monsignor Kizito BAHUJIMIHIGO, Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Fr. Antoine Kambanda, May 7, 2013, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kibungo to be the 4th Bishop.
Reverend Father Antoine KAMBANDA previously Rector of the Major Seminary of St Charles Borromeo Nyakibanda, Diocese of Butare, was ordained Sept. 8, 1990 by Pope John Paul II in Mbare, Kabgayi Diocese during his papal visit Rwanda.
His Excellency Monsignor Thaddeus Ntihinyurwa, Archbishop of Kigali remained Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Kibungo to the induction of Reverend Father Antoine Kambanda, July 20, 2013 in Kibungo.
